3 Ideas For Keeping Mice Out Of Your Home

Mice are frustrating pests because they destroy your personal possessions while leaving droppings everywhere that can be dangerously unhygienic for pets and small children. However, mice are living things and many people don't want to get rid of them by hurting them. Here are some ways to get dissuade mice from entering your home.

1. Try Peppermint Oil

The smell of peppermint is very strong and can result in mice becoming confused to the point where they avoid it. As a result, putting peppermint oil around the area where you store your dried goods can be an excellent way to make sure that mice don't go near it. To apply peppermint oil, you have a few different options. You can either soak cotton balls in peppermint oil and place them every few inches around your kitchen until the mice have learned that the kitchen is to be avoided, or you can load a spray bottle with peppermint oil and spray a line of the oil all around the kitchen, especially where you suspect that the mice are getting in. You will need to redo the oil every few days.

2. Apple Cider Vinegar

Another options is to use apple cider vinegar to create a solution that will dissuade mice from entering your apartment or your house. Mix a half gallon of apple cider vinegar with two gallons of water in order to create a solution that you can leave all around the house. Simply mix it in a bucket and sprinkle it all around the outside of your house. If you live in an apartment, find out where the mice are entering your home and soak a rag full of vinegar. Then, jam that rag into the hole that they are using to enter your house. This smell will overwhelm them and make them less likely to enter your home.

3. Seal Cracks

The last option is to seal the cracks in your home, especially in the kitchen where mice can smell the food. By sealing off all of the entrances to your home, you will be able to make sure that you are able to keep mice out without having to kill them. If you are not able to pay for proper crack sealing materials, as a temporary measure, use painters' tape to tape plywood over all of the cracks that are larger than a quarter of an inch wide. This will prevent mice from coming in while you gather the materials and funds to fix the cracks.
